ADAAM — Anti-Drug and Alcohol Abuse Movement

Anti-Drug & Alcohol Abuse Movement

A faith-based movement protecting Uganda’s children & youth

Our work

Six programmes. One promise: protection.

Every ADAAM programme answers a real, measured crisis — and every one is built to be carried by the community itself.

Substance Use Prevention & Recovery Support
01

Substance Use Prevention & Recovery Support

ADAAM works to prevent substance-related harm and strengthen support for people affected by alcohol and other drug use. Our approach combines school and community education, early identification of risk, recovery skills, family engagement, peer-support linkages and referral. We use discussions and accessible visual communication to help young people understand substance use, recognise pressures and triggers, and consider where to seek support — promoting respectful conversations that reduce stigma and make help-seeking easier.

  • School & university prevention sessions — from Exodus Secondary School, Wakiso to Kabale University
  • Early Recovery Skills with family involvement and peer-support linkages
  • Illustrated awareness materials on change, ambivalence and self-compassion
  • Illicit-alcohol prevention advocacy through CAIA–Uganda
Recovery Support & Reintegration
02

Recovery Support & Reintegration

Recovery is possible — and nobody should walk it alone. ADAAM trains ghetto youth in early recovery skills in communities like Mutungo-Biina, walks with families through rehabilitation, and pairs evidence-based recovery coaching with the voices of survivors who have made it through.

  • Early recovery skills training
  • Recovery coaching & peer support
  • Rehabilitation & reintegration support
  • Survivor storytelling platforms
Drowning Prevention
03

Drowning Prevention

Through “Saving Uganda’s Youth: A National Drowning Prevention Strategy”, we work with government and civil-society partners to strengthen coordination, safer inland water transport and public understanding of water safety. ADAAM’s role is to contribute evidence, convene and document discussions, support sector follow-up and communicate prevention priorities — the Uganda Police Force Marine Unit and the National Drowning Prevention Programme lead the government response.

  • National stakeholder convening with GHAI, CEPA and ADVOCEN
  • Policy evidence — briefs, SWOT analyses and sector consultations
  • Community engagement in Mayuge, Rakai and Masaka
  • School water safety & survival swimming with Reach A Hand Uganda

Supported by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the Global Health Advocacy Incubator (CTFK-GHAI).

Policy & Advocacy
04

Policy & Advocacy

As a founding member of the Coalition Against Illicit Alcohol — Uganda Chapter (CAIA–Uganda), ADAAM works with ministries, enforcement agencies, media and civil society to confront the illicit alcohol trade that puts toxic spirits in the hands of communities — and to champion lifesaving regulation.

  • CAIA–Uganda founding member
  • Alcohol control policy advocacy
  • Multi-sectoral government engagement
  • Media & public awareness campaigns
Uganda Recovery Walk
05

Uganda Recovery Walk

Since the first walk on 10 September 2016 — launched by then Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda — the Uganda Recovery Walk has given thousands a visible, joyful way to say recovery is possible. Each edition carries a theme of hope, from “Rise Above Stigma” to “Together We Are Stronger.”

  • Annual national recovery march
  • Community celebration of sobriety
  • Anti-stigma public education
  • Survivor & family participation
Faith & Community Action
06

Faith & Community Action

ADAAM is a faith-based organisation. We believe every person — youth, men, women, and people with disabilities — carries God-given worth. Our faith moves us into ghettos, landing sites and churches, safeguarding mental health and wellbeing with prayer, practical help and persistent presence.

  • Church & faith-leader partnerships
  • Mental health & wellbeing safeguarding
  • Ghetto youth outreach
  • Disability-inclusive programming
